HI007 Written On Rust

Harlem & Irving is proud to release Written On Rust by Erik Lynd. Realized over four compositions, the EP reflects his immersive and restrained approach to ambient drone composition and production. Working from a home studio on the bucolic shores of the Fox River in northeastern Illinois, his one-take-direct-to-analog-approach to recording adds to the simplicity and beauty of his work. Asked for some thoughts on the release, Erik offered the following:

“Recorded over two weeks in the fall of 2019, Written On Rust is both a love letter to family and memory, and a lament to the passing of time and loss. For me, these recordings are filled with grainy memories of childhood in my native Upper Peninsula Michigan. The smell of damp sandy soil and pine trees. The quiet of the forest. The stillness of spring fed lakes. And the understanding that everything changes. All tracks were performed live on my modular synthesizer. Recorded in single takes on NOS ¼” open reel tape.”

Opening track Elizabeth arrives from distant shores, rolling in on greyscale waves, offering a melodic balm to weary senses. Things take a darker turn with Sojourner, building from an atonal modular composition into something rhythmic buried underneath pulsing tones. Conversations With Trees invites the listener on a walk through a known/unknown forest to commune with sentient beings. The closer Oxide emerges from a sustained low rumble as mid-range tones emerge and collapse, allowing the track elements to ultimately ”rust“ in on themselves.

Available as a limited edition cassette (50 copies) and digital download/stream.
