HI010 Entropy Tapes
Harlem & Irving is proud to announce Entropy Tapes by Erik Lynd, his second release for the label. Ever interested in process and sonic manipulation, these 5 tracks arrive in the stereo field from somewhere distant, and evolve gradually into clouds of melody and noise. Asked for some thoughts on the release, Erik offered the following:
“Entropy Tapes is a series of experiments with ferromagnetic audio tape. Using tape as a recording medium, sound source, and an effect. It's also a study on generational loss. Making copies of copies until the original audio quality has been altered by the properties of the medium itself. Tools used in this project include; misc. cassette recorders, 4 track recorders, open reel tape machines, and microcassette recorders.”
The release sees Erik continuing his practice of working with a single melodic element, often a sample, processing it through his modular system, and then recording to tape, followed by additional levels of tape manipulation and saturation. Tapes 5 and 3 move in similar melodic, showgazed hues with curls of distortion dropping down from the ether. Tape 4 amplifies the hiss and noise elements to reveal a hint of rhythm in the background as an unknown narrator guides the listener down some seemingly never-ending hallway. Interlude 2 speaks for itself with bursts of color and sound, while Tape 7 shimmers and pitches ever upward.
Available as a limited edition cassette (50 copies) and digital download/stream.
